Leslie Stephen (1832–1904), the British writer, critic, alpinist and father of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, was one of the first presidents of the Alpine Club between 1865 and 1868. In this photograph, we see him with the Swiss mountain guide Melchior Anderegg (1828–1914) on the left. Together they conducted several first ascents in the Alps.
